-A lineup of 10 artists, who crosses the boundaries between theater screening and exhibition

-A free exhibition held at the Factory of Contemporary Arts in Palbok in Jeonju until June

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) launches a film installation program “Expanded Plus” to present films out of theater. The Jeonju IFF announced the 10 artists, from all over the world, participating the program and stated that “This year, a curated program called the “Expanded Plus” will be unveiled to go beyond the cinematic conventions and push the boundaries of modern cinema”.

The “Expanded Plus” is a program derived from the “Expanded Cinema” section, a section of films observing a wide range of experimental styles and modes in cinema. The masters, James Benning, Ben Rivers, Ju Anqi and Kevin Jerome Everson, who have shown creative artworks by crossing the boundaries between theater screening and installation exhibition, will participate the program along with emerging artists Natalia Marin, Malena Szlam, Jang Woo-jin, Jodie Mack, Peter Bo Rappmund/Adam R. Levine and Helena Wittmann, the world is paying attention to.

The Jeonju IFF invited 10 artists to share visions of innovation and promote collaboration between the festival and the artists through the “Expanded Plus” program. Most of the artworks will be simultaneously exhibited by theater screening, projection and installation. The Jeonju IFF programmer Jang Byungwon shared the purpose of creating the program as,“The acclaimed “Expanded Cinema” section represents the identity of Jeonju IFF. The “Expanded Plus” program is a challenge as it raises the question about the creativity of experimenting on a film festival’s program. Through this program, the Jeonju IFF wishes to share how far films have achieved, guide the cinematic possibilities and question the very parameters of what a film screening can be”.

In January, the Jeonju IFF signed a business contract for expanding the diversity of visual culture with the Jeonju Cultural Foundation and prepared the “Expanded Plus” program as co-hosts. The “Expanded Plus” program will be held at the Factory of Contemporary Arts in Palbok, an art space that used to be a cassette tape factory. The Jeonju IFF proclaimed that the “Expanded Plus” program will become the future direction of the next 20 years of Jeonju IFF. Moreover, a shuttle bus service will be provided departing every 20 minutes during the festival period to aid audiences to visit the Factory of Contemporary Arts in Palbok located far away from the festival.

The 10 artists participating in the “Expanded Plus” program will be introduced at the upcoming Jeonju IFF official press conference on April 2nd. The exhibition, as part of the project of making art, culture and film festivals more accessible, will continue to open until June.
