- 10 feature films selected out of 104 submissions

- A New energy and flow discovered among the repetition of Korean independent filmmaking

- 2 documentaries selected, following the Jeonju IFF’s tradition of discovering emerging talents in documentaries

The Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) announced the 10 Korean Competition official selections which will be presented at the 20th Jeonju IFF. Jeonju IFF stated that,“After a rigorous preliminary evaluation, 10 feature films were selected as the Korean Competition official selections. Feature films that qualifies the three regulations, entries that are the first or second feature of the filmmaker, produced after January 2018, and that have not been presented in South Korea, were only qualified for the entry.”

10 feature films including 8 fictions and 2 documentaries out of 104 submissions were selected for the 20th Jeonju IFF Korean Competition. Fiction films Goodbye Summer by Park Juyoung, My Punch-Drunk Boxer by Jung Hyuk-ki, Remain by Kim Minkyung, Atlantic City by Ra Juhyoung, A Bedsore by Shim Hyejung, Unfamiliar Family by Jeong Seung-o, WAVE by Choi Changhwan, and Scattered Night by Kim Sol and Lee Jihyoung, and documentaries Own Way by Kim Songmi and The Sea of Itami Jun by Jung Dawoon are this year’s Jeonju IFF choice.

Kim Youngjin, the utive programmer of Jeonju IFF, shared in the jury commentary that,“The current trend of Korea’s Independent films is covering the frustration and anger of young Koreans about the hopeless reality. The 10 selections are highly accomplished for presenting a new energy and flow among the repetition of Korean independent filmmaking nowadays.”

Among the selected fictions, A Bedsore and Unfamiliar Family were made with the support by the “Jeonju Cinema Fund” of the “Jeonju Project Market.”WAVE is a new film by Choi Changhwan, whose films have been selected for the competition for 2 years in a row. This year’s selection addresses the diversity as follows: An offbeat comedic rhythm of My Punch-Drunk Boxer simultaneously brings sadness and the joy out. The amazing performance of a child actor from Scattered Night dominates the narrative. And Unfamiliar Family seeks affection and dignity in the conflict among family members.

The Jeonju IFF is renowned in discovering great documentaries such as Spy Nation (2016) and Our President (2017). This year, 2 documentaries selected for Korean Competition also deserves attention for their novelty. The utive programmer commented that the way Jung Dawoon’s The Sea of Itami Jun depicts the life and artistic accomplishments of the prominent, Korean resident in Japan, architect with a camera and Kim Songmi’s Own Way’s approach of showing young people seeking new forms of life by establishing an alternative community were original and exciting.

The 10 selections will compete for the 20th Jeonju IFF’s Grand Prize, Distribution Support Prize and Upcoming Project Prize under the CGV Arthouse Award, and the Best Acting Award. In particular, the newly established Best Acting Award will be awarded to an actress and actor for showing superb performances.
