? Despite COVID-19 being prevalent, the trailer conveys the festival’s direction and message with a hope to communicate through film and art

The 21st JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) which will hold its jury screenings, online screenings, and extended screenings from May 28 to September 20, as a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19, has revealed this year’s official trailer.

The trailer for the 21st JEONJU IFF starts with the blue sky, representing the wishes of the audience, filmmakers, and artists who dream to communicate with each other. The 21st JEONJU IFF’s trailer was directed by JEONG Dahee, a leader in Korean animation who was invited to the 20th JEONJU IFF with her film, Movements (2019).

Following Man on the Chair (2014) and The Empty (2016), director JEONG Dahee’s Movements was invited to Korean Competition for Shorts at JEONJU IFF 2019, attracting the attention of international film festivals and making her name one of the leaders in Korean short animations. Music director KIM Haewon who worked on Moonlit Winter (2019), Last Child (2017), and For Vagina’s Sake (2017), as well as sound designer LEE Juseok, who work on films of diverse genres including JEONG’s Movements, teamed up with director JEONG Dahee.

Despite having COVID-19 among us, the trailer expresses the hope of the audience and filmmakers who want to see the world through film, art, and film festivals, while underlining the festival’s slogan for this year: “Cinema, Liberated and Expressed.” The last scene with the many windows symbolizes films, screens, and viewers. At the same time, the windows also represent diversity, which reminds us of the people who encourage each other through film and art. JEONG Dahee who directed the trailer said, “I expressed the desire to communicate as we fight through COVID-19 in confinement, by looking inside through the windows, and looking outside through films.”

The official trailer will be played prior to the screenings of all invited films to the JEONJU IFF during the online screening period from May 28 to June 6, then through the extended screening period from June 9 to September 20. Festival Director LEE Joondong said, “I hope the 21st JEONJU IFF’s official trailer will be able to console the filmmakers who poured out their hearts and souls under difficult working conditions, as well as the audiences who are giving generous encouragement to them.”

Remark on the Trailer

The trailer for the JEONJU IFF reflects the festival’s wish to encourage people who are cooped up in their homes due to Covid-19 to open the windows to their hearts and communicate via film. The countless windows in the last scene represent films, screens and the audience. It also symbolizes the diversity of the JEONJU IFF, the “Cinema, Liberated and Expressed.” and reminds us of people who encourage each other through their connection to art. I hope that all life?people, animals, plants, microorganisms, and even the existences that we are currently unaware of?can live happily together.
