The JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) which will be held both online and offline starting Thursday, April 29, confirmed and announced the program events for this year.

In order to run a festival safe from the COVID-19 pandemic, the JEONJU IFF held from April 29 to May 8 will fill only 30% of the theaters on and around Jeonju Film Street for its offline screenings, while the online screenings will be available on the OTT platform, wavve (www.wavve.com, only in Korea). Meanwhile, Master Class, discussions, talks, and many other events will be held in theaters and also made available on the festival’s official YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/JEONJUIFF).

The 22nd JEONJU IFF’s program events which one can enjoy both online and offline include Master Classes with professionals who each became successful in their own specialties, Cinema Class and JEONJU Talk! Talk! that reflect the uniqueness of JEONJU IFF, and its Naver audio clip channel, JEONJU in Audio with LEE Hwajung (visible radio).

Firstly, the program events you can attend in theaters are Master Class and Cinema Class. In Master Class, we’ll dissect the cinematic world of Canadian filmmaker Denis Cote, who is presenting Social Hygiene at this year’s JEONJU IFF. In addition, Han Okhi who led the very first Korean female experimental film group Kaidu club and is also a guest of the Special Focus: I am Independent will step forward to talk about her film life. Also, K-Sound Master Class will be held in collaboration with the Jeonju IT&CT Industry Promotion Agency (JICA). Sound supervisor Ralph T. Choi, and Foley artists Yang Daeho and Moon Jaehong will study Parasite: Black-And-White Edition and The City Of Violence through the themes of “Sound Design and Narrative” and “Creation of Sound, the World of Foley,” respectively. After the screenings of major titles like the opening film FATHER, the programmer will go up on stage with critics, film scholars, directors, and journalists to provide commentary on the film in Cinema Class.

The JEONJU IFF prepared diverse program events which can be enjoyed free of charge on the festival’s official YouTube channel, and Naver audio clip, JEONJU in Audio with LEE Hwajung. The online program events will have many discussions with different professionals on social issues in diverse fields that relate to the film selection of the 22nd festival. For the online version of Cinema Class, a mini section called “World Cinema: Sports is for Women” will talk about the women who challenge themselves with writers Kim Hana and Hwang Sunwoo. Journalist Lee Dahyeh will be joined by congresswoman Jang Hye-yeong, who is also the director of Grown Up, to talk about the social constraints and prejudices surrounding one’s dreams and hopes in “Your Story on the Screen.” Music critic Hwang Deok-ho and programmer Chun Jinsu will lead the discussion for “Search the Path of Jazz,” while programmer Sung Moon will be joined by director Kim Soy and actress Sohn Suhyun for “Beyond the Intimate Danger” which is also worth paying attention to. JEONJU Talk! Talk! where invited cast and directors participate, indie stars Gong Seung-yeon, Yoo Da-in, Gong Min-jeong, and Shim Dalgi will make an appearance. During “ATO Special: Fresh Wind,” directors Kim Jung-in, Jung Soyoung, and Hwang Seul-gi will hold a discussion with director Yoon Gaeun of The House of Us and The World of Us.

Since its launch in February of last year, JEONJU in Audio with LEE Hwajung has been delivering JEONJU IFF news and in-depth conversations on upcoming indie and art film releases. This year, it will be available via Naver audio clip and visible radio. The Naver audio clip will take the time to introduce each and every 25 films in the Korean Competition for Shorts section at the 22nd JEONJU IFF through five different themes. Meanwhile, visible radio which will be broadcasted live on YouTube and Naver audio clip will take a look at Coming to you in Korean Competition to look back at the changes in Korean queer cinema in the “Even though Our Path is Rough and Far,” while the “Twinkle Twinkle” will spotlight youth films and their protagonists. Lastly, “Your First with Purplay” is an event where filmmakers Lim Soonrye, Boo Jiyoung, and Yoon Gaeun will share the stories from when they were rookies, jointly organized by JEONJU IFF and Purplay, a film platform for women’s cinema. This event is a follow-up to Purplay’s “Independent Women: Your first” which is a relay program of the JEONJU IFF’s leading section, “Special Focus: I am Independent”.

More details related to the program events can be found on JEONJU IFF’s website (www.jeonjufest.kr), while announcements will be made on the festival’s official social media channels such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
