Review

A bedridden mother is in a coma surviving on a respirator. Her son gives her euthanasia and sets off on a long journey. Don´t get wrong. This is not a story of a horrible crime. To the contrary, the bold combination of documentary, fiction and road movie, Denis Cote´s debut feature is tantamount to an inspiring poem of meditation with the beautiful visual and minimal music. Christian gets a shave and a haircut and embarks on an automobile trip for hundreds of miles leaving his past behind. With the help of the kind and cooperative residents he settles down in a town that he visits for the first time. He finds a job and begins to discover happiness and love in the simple country life. The director unveils regional issues of Quebec such as migration and industrial development through the people Christian meet in his journey. The interviews of the locals of Quebec inserted throughout the movie convey their real voices on the issues like euthanasia, urban problems and industrial development adding interesting flavor to the film. The 80,000 dollar budget film introduces the audience to an independent filmmaker with unique styles.
