Director Otar Iosseliani´s second film belongs to society-critical ´new films´ produced at Georgia Film Studio in the sixties and seventies. In the film that comically portrays the vain dream of a young man who seeks an escape from his repetitive daily life, the protagonist earns his living as a percussionist in an orchestra aspiring to a composer but gets
attracted to the constantly changing views on the streets rather than concentrating
on his trivial seven-minutes long performance. The streets are filled with unbounded possibilities and instant pure pleasures and make him feel as if he could grasp anything if he reached out with his hands. But eventually he is hit by car the instant he glance at a beautiful woman. The director called his works ´abstract comedy,´ and the film banned for 4 years without a particular reason and was discovered at Cannes in 1974 finally to be shown to the outer world. To a film censor, the free acting protagonist would have seen as a dangerous individualist in the Soviet society that moves uniformly like an orchestra.
