Review

Kelly Reichardt first achieved acclaim with Old Joy and then established her reputation among the critics with her third film Wendy and Lucy in 2008. Wendy and Lucy focused only on Wendy, the protagonist, and showed one aspect of neoliberalism without forcing a series of materials or scenes loaded with political views, thrusting both director Kelly Reichardt and actress Michelle Williams into the spotlight in the world of independent cinema in the U.S. Meek’s Cutoff contains the delicate character descriptions unique to Kelly Reichardt and provides an interesting stage where things take place mostly in the wild west of the past. Its roots lie in wild western classics that are familiar to us and the film is headed by the subtle inner confliction among the characters, but ‘women’ are the ones holding the guns and pulling the triggers, making it delightfully new and refreshing. The film criticizes and denies the pioneer myths of the Wild West that are riddled with masculinity by showing incidental conflict between native Americans and women in charge of farming instead of militant conflict between cowboys and native Americans. Cowboys, heroes, and spectacular chase scenes, as well as revisionism, typically accompanying the western are reduced to being unnecessary and burdensome for this film. It is an amazing film that strikes a perfect balance between shocking us by uprooting the foundations of the history of America and the showing breathtaking landscape of the wilderness. It is a completely new type of western. (Kang Minyoung)
