Review

Single Man is a Chinese black comedy placed on a small village 150km northern from Beijing. Although the film can be regarded as a typical Chinese rural film because of the landscape background of the movie, its episodes are reminiscent of Woody Allen’s chatty narration on sex. Gujiagou, the background of this film, is the hometown of the director who graduated from Beijing Film Academy. This feature-length film debut of Hao is created with friends and family. The main characters’ performances are natural and wonderful because the director extracts all characters of the film from his close people and it is based on them. The film follows low key and very unsophisticated four old single men whose lives built upon sexual frustrations. Due to a shortage of women in the village, they needed to buy brides from neighboring villages, but they ended up become elderly bachelors since they could not afford any money to make a family. The film is about an old single men who could not marry because of the poverty and keep living with unsolved desires about women. Although the film’s motive was from a notion of preferring a son to a daughter, its cinematic pleasure actually is from the director’s talents with which it portrays a small village through sexual relationship among vivid characters simply and easily. In particular, the film’s last scene can be nominated as the best scene among Chinese independent films in 2010. (Lim Kyung Yong)
