Review

Why Does Wind Blow consists of the footages extracted from scientific education film, a cultural film about family planning, anti-communism film and so on. It is socalled ‘found-footage film’(It is a filmmaking term which assembles footages from existing films or archival footages as a source, and makes them have new meaning totally unconnected with former purpose of those original films). Each film is consistently shown on split-screen in two. This film portrays how the films work as a film form and how they are made of. The director shows his own cinematic experience visually such as pendulum movement, intermittent movement, the actions of retinas, persistence of vision, scientific experiments, the thermometer used at a development stage and even the final stage, screening. In the film’s beginning, there is the line, “When the world is distrustful of us, we should stand it and hang in there, so we can give new perception.” And it is telling us obliquely what the experimental filmmaking is in Korea.
