Review

Compared to his earlier Disney deconstruction Shadow Cuts, Soft Palate is a more solitary and fragmented affair; literally, as it rhythmically builds Mickey´s sleeping body out of the darkness of his bedroom one body part at a time, revealing hands and mouth and tongue all set to Arnold’s fabricated sense of the Mouse´s hypnotic nighttime whistle-snore.

Martin Arnold

Born in Vienna in 1959. Studied psychology and art history at the University of Vienna. Has worked as an independent filmmaker since 1988. Taught at art schools and universities such as the San Francisco Art Institute (1996/97), the Stadelschule in Frankfurt (1998/99), Bard College in New York (2000/01) and CalArts in Los Angeles (2008). In recent years works on video like Soft Palate (2011), Self Control and Haunted House (2011).
