It is the first live-action feature film of Sylvain Chomet, French animation director well-known for his previous work The Illusionist. Lost his parents at a young age, Paul lives with his two aunts. They wanted to make Paul a virtuoso pianist, but the 33-year-old just plays the piano in a dance school. [LEE Sang-yong]
One day, Paul visits his neighbor Madame Proust. After eating crops raised by her, he recalls repressed memories from the past. They are painful yet beautiful, showing precious reminiscences of his parents who were professional wrestlers.
As Paul and Madame Proust meet repeatedly, the movie reveals the mystery in Paul´s past. Also, it is, in a way, an implicit portrayal of Paul´s growing up. Added to this is Madame Proust´s sad stories. Together, they unfold a beautiful fairy tale of those who have ‘scars’.
Wordless scenes discreetly revive the glory of old silent comedy films. Movie fans will be able to find the traces of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton.
