Mauro Herce is a cinematographer for the film Coast of Death which won Best Picture Award in 2014 JIFF. In this debut feature, Herce shows very creative approach to narrative and image. The film describes the interior of a freighter, the coexistence of machine and human, and a small universe created by collisions. It questions how the competition with machine changes human labor. When a sea route disappears, where will the voyage lead to? Slow-moving heavy freighter and machines are described as a monster which devours humans. The film is based on the negative prospect that modern technology and machine only make social evils worse, not better. Huge machine seems to overpower mere human. Roaring machines and spaces may give you the feel of horror films. The film proves that the most inhumane approach is required to deliver the most humane message. Herce received the Special Jury Prize in 2015 Locarno Film Festival. (JANG Byungwon)
