The Wounded Angel
Director_ Emir BAIGAZIN
Kazakhstan, France, Germany 2015 112min DCP color feature Fiction
Review

Baigazin is a rising Kazakhstani director who won the Silver Bear at Berlin with his debut feature, Harmony Lesson. The film concerned Aslan’s boyhood, while The Wounded Angel depicts diverse characters. Set in Kazakhstan in mid-90s, the film reveals four boys. Zharas hauls sacks of flour to make ends meet. Toad scavenges for scrap metal and Chick is preparing for a song contest. Aslan learns his girlfriend pregnant just before his admission to medical school. They are teenagers aspiring for their own future, but the reality defies them. The director closely follows the boys painfully challenged by the reality. It speaks about the pain of growing as well as the director’s confession on the current nation. The film arouses cinematically familiar but still heavy sense of weight of reality. (LEE Sang-yong)
