Review

Lost and Beautiful is about a kind shepherd Tommaso from Campania in Southern Italy. A servant named Pulcinella is sent from Mount Vesuvius to Campania to grant Tommaso’s last wish. Pulcinella’s mission is to save a buffalo, Sarchiapone. Representing the new generation of Italian cinema, Pietro Marcello is known for bold works in between fiction and documentary. In this film, Marcello engraves his unique signature by oscillating between neo-realism and Pasolini-like fable. By utilizing 16mm film, archive footage, and folktale, it conveys the beauty of disappearing things through poetic images. In reminiscence of the Commedia dell’Arte, it enters the mythical realm and suggests the power of poetic cinema with the elements of multiple facets. The film shows the power of cinematic images that cannot be easily defined. [JANG Byungwon]
