Review

This film attempts communication by transforming and distorting images. The first image is in black and white, and projected into a black box. He looks down, listening in on a female guerrilla fighter and translating her words. A 16mm film glides through the man´s hands and is transferred to a laptop screen frame by frame. Filipa Cesar´s ''Spell Reel ''is the result of a digitization project. In 2011 she discovered long-lost visual materials in Guinea-Bissau and realized the contents carried the vision of decolonization put forward by the independence movement’s leader, Amilcar Cabral. After digitizing the work, the director made footage of showing it to audiences and added her own commentary. The repetitious yet transformative process presents an experimental archive of the present. History is both restored and written over. [LEE Sang-yong]
