Review

The first full-length feature film by Bertrand Mandico who has created an original world with more than 40 short films. It follows the evil deeds and punishments of the five bourgeois teenage boys who commit a misdeed habitually, set in the island of La Reunion in early 20th century. Those who have been extradited by a crime travel under the direction of the Dutch captain. ''The Wild Boys ''shows an imaginative and unconventional narrative. While it presents the mixture of elements in ''Lord Of The Flies''(1963), ''A Clockwork Orange''(1971), and even ''Emmanuelle''(1974), It was a live action film, ''Goto, Island of Love''(1969) by Walerian Borowczyk that inspired Mandico. He succeeds in making frenetic political allegory in feature-length rhythm, without giving up the aesthetics of experimental film sustained by wicked voyeurism in his short films. [JANG Byungwon]
