This slow movie puts a brake on the inadaptable speed of the world. With nostalgia as its underlying sentiment, Jeon Jeehee’s debut feature starts with Kitae’s return to his hometown after failing the national exam for ten years. He gives up on everything and goes back to his hometown only to be treated like a good-for-nothing by everyone. He then starts doing chores at the decrepit local theater. Later, he finds hope as he comes to rely on the theater manager Mr. Oh, and falls for Young-eun who toils and moils to achieve her dream. The highlight of the film lies not in the ingenuity of events but in the delicate description of the characters’ psychology, emotions and actions that reflect their attitudes. The copy phrase "Life Is Beautiful" from Peppermint Candy written across the signboard in front of the theater sums up the message of this film. [JANG Byungwon]
