This film follows middle school students who live around Saint-Denis, a norther suburb of Paris where there is a big immigrant population. They come from diverse background. They have discussions about various things. They talk about whether or not they are French. Behind the young faces of the students, we can figure out what community means to them and to us. They keep on answering political questions such as racial discrimination, social violence and talking about films, during which we find how insightful these young minds are. Their fresh insight renders the documentary even more dramatic with lively dynamics. The students´ selfies reveal the inner selves of teenagers who are tech and media savvy as well as what they struggle with inwardly. At the same time, the selfies constitute cinematic frame where filmmaking become a collaborative work. Together, Un film dramatique tells us a story of children growing up to be independent individuals who are capable of leading their own lives. While we observe the growth, we also encounter a question of what constitutes art in the era flooded with multimedia. [Sung MOON]
