Review

What does it mean to a film in Hong Kong nowadays? Or, rather, what does it mean to live in Hong Kong? Although this trite question has been repeating endlessly since 1997, no one seems to be concerned anymore. , a film directed by Hong Kong director Yan Yan Mak seems to be an allegory of the often-asked question. Thus, the film is the self-portrait of a young director and a journey of finding one´s identity. A young man from Hong Kong travels through the mainland in search of his brother. Outside the car window Tibetans pass by, and a vast land of beautiful scenery enters the man´s eyes. It is easy, from the first few minutes to tell that this film is a ´road movie´, The stranger experiences memories of days gone by when his brother and his friends used to meet. As expected, however, the man cannot find his brother. When he starts to head back home, he realizes that he has to find more than just his brother. The scenery in is quite different from the China we have become accustomed to-it is beautiful and exotic. Perhaps the answer to the question is that the people of Hong Kong will forever remain as strangers and outsiders.
