Filmed in 1946, right after the defeat of Japan, this documentary takes a look at how Japan came to be dominated by militarism and fascism. Japan underwent a sudden modernization immediately following the Meiji Period, leading to capitalism. With their move towards capitalism, their productivity increased and they needed a means by which to secure both the domestic and overseas markets. This becomes clear into a state of war. Although Japanese capitalists became rich, the majority of the Japanese people were driven into poverty while being mobilized for war. The police started arresting communists and pacifists and throwing them into jail. As a result, Japan became a fascist nation and the people were structured into an orderly militaristic state. The war between fascism and the colonial powers was inevitable. The result was defeat and thousands of lives lost due to the atomic bomb. In the long time that it took to reach this tragic end, a new fascist Japan was already in the works and a contradictory logic had been mobilized. This documentary gives us quite an objective look at this process and it is hard to believe that this film was made shortly after Japan´s defeat.
