Review

If anyone feels that a comprehensive orientalism has served as no better than providing some curious information on the Islamic world, Nasser Refeie´s debut feature film will serve as a valuable source. Of course, the Islamic world is not a unified socio-cultural unit. It takes various forms, divided according to denomination and by national and political interests. To those in the audience who remember the oppressive patriarchy of , women in this film may seem rather happy. For in , the hard-line Islamic state of Iran that has broken with the US is revealing a remarkable life force more naturally than we imagined. However, as we move through the film, which starts like a documentary, we soon realize that Iran is definitely not a country of ´angels´ (or ´gabeh´). It is a society going through a dynamic process of development. In order to reveal the reality of Iran, in search of a new passage between tradition and transformation, the director looks at different women gathered to take a university entrance examination. Instead of simply reduced to being the victims of patriarchy, they appear as different individuals with independent minds. From the ordinary girls mocking a guard, to the woman who runs away from her husband to take the exam, and to the mothers who bring along their children, they all differ in age, class and disposition. The film runs in actual time, during which they wait for the exam to start, and takes up the strategy of delicately sketching the inner differences among the women, thereby making concrete the politics of Iranian women existing between grief and hope as a reality, not an ideal.
