Review

The Badri family, who have been living peacefully in the mountains for 8 years away from the noise and pollution of Beirut, face a conflict because of a landfill that is suddenly constructed by their house. The smoke and rusty water from illegally burned garbage bring out the family’s conflict with the outside world as well as each family member’s own desires that they had not been aware of. Words like home, family, freedom, and country have different meanings for everyone. This is the first feature film by Munia Akl, and it recalls the protests held over garbage in Beirut in 2015 and the port explosions from two years ago, hinting at the current political unrest in Lebanon. But more importantly, the camera closely observes the subtle exchanges within the Badri family. Actor, filmmaker, and activist Nadine Labaki and new actors who play the daughters bring life to compelling characters. [CHO Hyo Jin]
