Review

Nina Menkes' filmography is not well known, but with the recent digital restoration of several of her films, she is beginning to establish herself as a pioneer in independent films and feminist films. Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power is a report on how women are portrayed in cinema based on the expression “male gaze” created by a cultural critic and theorist Laura Mulvey. From the classics to the latest films, it technically analyzes the scenes in the films shaped by the gaze of not only male but also female directors. Like all great teachings, Menkes takes the audience to a new perspective, allowing us to rethink what we see and how we perceive it. Reading film in the way she proposes is essential for art to continue, and on that note, Menkes is faithfully fulfilling her own role in this documentary. [Sung MOON]
