In the films by Lee Chang-dong, space means more than a place where a community exists and the characters live on. It is a place where their lives continue, confrontations with others occur, the epic of existence dilemma surfaces, and true emotions are hidden. From time to time, radical changes are witnessed and the minds and hearts are dramatically fluctuating as well. Green Fish describes the triangle relationship between innocent and kind Mak-dong, cold and cruel gang boss Tae-gon, and Tae-gon’s lover Mi-ae who wants to escape from him. It also tells the realization of quite opposite dreams of Mak-dong and Tae-gon. But the story is so profound that it cannot just conclude with the death and the betrayal that is the convention of noir films. Lee’s films show the way of secretly carving realistic expressions of our life and irony that can never be understood. Green Fish is a signal for the beginning of Lee’s films. [PARK Inho]
