YUN Suik’s debut film Groggy Summer, portrayed anguished youth in close-up shots and was screened at the JEONJU IFF ten years ago. He returns with his second film, Heavy snow, which also describes the love and wandering thoughts of youth. While the previous movie focuses on poetry, Heavy snow is about two girls/women, Suan and Seol, who agonize over film and acting. When Suan first meets Seol, at a performing art high school in Gangneung she has already been a famous actress since childhood, but Suan is an aspiring actress who isn’t sure about the future. They become close quickly and build up feelings between ‘friendship’ and ‘melodrama’ both in Seoul and by the sea, but they lose contact as time passes. As an adult, Suan becomes a famous actress but can’t adapt to the situation, as she still longs for Seol. The scene with Suan and Seol fatefully meeting again on the winter beach in the latter part of the film is portrayed with realistic fantasy or fantastic reality. And their inner minds are described through images, like the wild sea and a white snowfield, leaving an impression like Jackson Pollock’s abstract paintings. Actress Han Sohee’s fresh looks before she was famous are also fascinating. (MOON Seok)
