Diaries (1971-1976) is a pioneering work of first-person cinema and a daring experiment many have tried but with only rare success. The Havard Film Archive restored Diaries (1971-1976) using original 16mm elements and in consultation with filmmaker Ross McElwee, a close associate of Pincus. "It was a time of upheaval in people's personal relations. Everything was on the table. Evolving filmmaking technology made it possible for the first time to shoot single-person sync. A single crew member can film an intimate relationship over a long duration without the burden of increasing costs. I decided to do an experiment. I would film for five years, not look at the footage, leave it in the can for five more years, and then edit. Editing would mimic what came from the camera (the rushes). I wanted to test the feminist slogan, 'the personal is political' in this brave new world of relationships." -Ed Pincus (Haden GUEST)
