Review

The Yellow Vests protests, which began in October 2018 when the French government increased fuel taxes, was a tumultuous movement in French society that began with frustration that the government was making it harder for low-income people to make ends meet and gradually grew into a criticism of President Macron’s pro-business policies for deepening poverty and inequality. The Yellow Vests protests, which lasted until April 2019, resulted in a number of deaths and injuries, as well as arson, looting, and vandalism of cultural heritage. It was a movement that had its side effects, but it also sparked a debate in 21st-century French society. This documentary shows how four men and women in the small town of Chartre, southwest of Paris, became involved in the yellow vests movement, how they built solidarity with the local population, and most importantly, how ordinary small-town residents were able to make their voices heard. Although the yellow vest movement has since fallen apart, Macron is back in power and has recently been pushing for pension reform… (CHUN Jinsu)
