Born in 1936, Thomas Hoepker is a legendary German photographer who also served as chairperson of the renowned photo agency Magnum. In 2017, Hoepker was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He left many masterpieces that are imprinted in people’s minds such as a photo of boxer Muhammad Ali or a picture of the destroyed World Trade Center on the September 11 attacks. As a photographer whose memory and observational skills are crucial, he slowly loses his memory. He embarks on a photographic journey across the United States with his wife in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. For Hoepker, who had already traveled across the United States and produced a photobook Heartland, An American Road Trip in 1963, it was the path-closing work of his lifetime photographic career. Director Nahuel LOPEZ showed his mastery of road documentaries with his previous work, EL VIAJE–A Road Trip into Chile’s Musical Heritage. He captures Hoepker’s humor and enthusiasm as he accompanies the veteran photographer on the journey. (CHUN Jinsu)
