This new film by legendary Japanese director ADACHI Masao in six years tells the story of Yamagami Tetsuya, who shot and killed Japanese former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo during a public speech on July 8, 2022. It may sound weird to make a film about such a recent incident. However, as you watch the movie, you can see the immediacy of depicting a painfully controversial event as fiction is inherent in the director's aesthetics and choices. The film's unfiltered raw and rough aspects and its speed are limited to serve as a formal device to emphasize the madness of the story Masao tells the audience. It is a work that delicately depicts a current issue that few people can approach due to its urgency, the complexity of the problem at focus, and lives alienated by religion and politics. Undoubtedly controversial, this film will provoke a heated discussion among the audience. A painful movie to watch in its portrayal reality with so much suffering. (Sung MOON)
