Director AHN Jeehwan’s documentary At the Peak of Our Own Story recounts the story of the MAM, Monday Artist Mountain club, established by actor Son Byung-ho in 2006. The club has continued its ascent of Mt. Bukhan every Monday since then. Its core members are actors with significant theatre experience but relatively little exposure in broadcasting or film. The film highlights the stories of actors who have found solace in the club. One actor expresses how the club provides him with a sense of belonging amid the transient lifestyle of an actor. Another actor recalls how being a part of the club helps him reconnect with his identity as an actor. The documentary depicts the actors’ deep struggles, such as the conflicts after the decision to pursue an acting career later in life or the circumstances in which the actor had to take a break from acting after suffering the recent loss of his mother. The film also portrays mountains as a source of great comfort for actors, who may seem glamorous but suffer from loneliness and isolation. This is a film that can motivate viewers, even those who aren’t interested in hiking, to consider mountain climbing. (MOON Seok)
