MIÚCHA, THE VOICE OF BOSSA NOVA

Director_ Liliane MUTTI, Daniel ZARVOS

USA, France, Brazil 2022 99min DCP Color/B&W feature Documentary
Review

Here is one of Brazil’s most iconic musical families, and a woman at the center of it all. Miúcha is the wife of João Gilberto, the father of Bossa Nova, the older sister of singer and novelist Chico Buarque, and the mother of Bebel Gilberto. She sang in a vocal group with her siblings from a young age and was influenced by Simone de Beauvoir. While studying art history in Paris, she met Chilean singer Violeta Parra, who was living in exile in Paris at the time and rekindled her passion for music. She then moved to the United States with João Gilberto, where she helped him with his music career and raised their daughter Bebel. After breaking up with João Gilberto, she moved back to Brazil to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter. Director Daniel ZARVOS, Miúcha’s nephew had been working on a biopic about her since before she passed away in 2018, and this Bossa Nova-enchanting film is the outcome. (CHUN Jinsu)
