Jacques Rivette, a film critic who first appeared in the legendary film journal Cahiers du Cinéma, is perhaps one of the most respected yet understated figures. Part of this could be attributed to his films, which never offer an easy path for the audience. Unlike Jean-Luc Godard or François Truffaut, who seemed to grasp stardom from the outset, Rivette’s cinematic universe remains less explored. In particular, L’Amour Fou was a film that was cursed and lost for years until it was recently restored and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. About L’Amour Fou (1969), film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum remarked, “This film captures the dreams and desperation of the 60s like few others, and you emerge from it changed; it’s a life experience as much as a film experience.” As the title suggests, the film delves into love and madness, reminiscent of last year’s Cinephile JEONJU screening The Mother and the Whore, almost like engaging in a dialogue.
