Review

Haofeng, a rich young man from Shanghai, heads to Yanji to attend an acquaintance’s wedding. Though he suffers from depression, he can’t help but follow Nana, his attractive tour guide, when he meets her. Nana also becomes interested in Haofeng, and introduces her best friend Xiao, who works in a Yanbian restaurant. The three get along swimmingly and spend time all around Yanji, while Xiao and Nana’s relationship becomes complicated due to Haofeng. Though the relationship between the three turns into a strange love triangle, they become friends by facing each of their personal anxiety and depression. Anthony Chen’s newest film on the youth set in Yanji, one of the coldest places in China in the northeast and connected with the Korean peninsula, captures the grand landscapes of Baekdu Mountain in the background and is reminiscent of François Truffaut’s Jules and Jim (1962). A project that began without a script, the chemistry between Liu Haoran as Haofeng, Zhou Dongyu as Nana, and Qu Chuxiao as Xiao truly elevates the film. (CHUN Jinsu)
