Set against the backdrop of Jeju Island, Where is My Father? is a minimalist film where nothing dramatic happens. It follows Yoon, who is days away from leaving Jeju for Seoul, as he searches for his father who has been absent for some time. The events that unfold in this road movie are trivial. Yoon eventually meets his father's acquaintances and ultimately his father himself, discovering previously unknown details, though nothing particularly remarkable. The film only briefly touches on seemingly important matters—why Yoon is moving to Seoul, how his father became involved in the Gangjeong peace protests, or what he did with all that borrowed money—without delving into explanations. Perhaps what truly matters is not the backstory of hidden motivations but simply Yoon's journey to find his father. Where is My Father? seems to scatter clues throughout—television news playing at a pub where Yoon meets his friends, termination notices and other documents spread across the table at home, and the path from Han Sungik's shop through a tangerine sorting facility—allowing viewers to piece together their own narrative. The insider's view of Jeju Island is another impressive element of this film. (MOON Seok)
