? Alphabet “J’ from JEONJU to create a character

? Great Masters, Quay Brothers’ still used in the compelling poster

JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) revealed its official poster for the 21st edition.

This year’s official poster put an emphasis on the city brand of Jeonju by using the letter "J" while announcing the new beginning of the JEONJU IFF. The letter "J" takes the form of torn and pasted paper, which represents how free-spirited independent films are as they break the rules and challenge all kinds of norms. Although their approach may be rough and unruly, the character represents the support for their exploration of creativity and experiments. In addition, the letter "J" represents JEONJU of JEONJU IFF, which successfully ran for 20 years since its establishment and is now standing at a new starting line. From this year on, JEONJU IFF plans to make variations of the "J" and to make it into a unique symbol to show the identity of the film festival.

The image in the background of the poster is a still that dramatically show the identity of JEONJU IFF, which introduces the flow of alternative contemporary films and art, as well as independent and experimental films that are at the forefront.

This still with handmade puppets create a unique mood and attract attention. The still used in this poster is from the Tailor´s Shop scene in Quay Brothers´ masterpiece, Street of Crocodiles. The Brothers were the leaders of animation in 1980s, and they´re artists with a unique style. This year, JEONJU IFF has prepared to celebrate Quay Brothers´ achievements through a special focus called "Quay Brothers: Masters of Puppet Animation" and a special exhibition called "Quay Brothers: Welcome to the ≫Dormitorium≪".

Quay Brothers: Welcome to the ≫Dormitorium≪ will be taken place as planned, from May 15 at the Factory of Contemporary Arts in Palbok and will be continued to the latter half of the year at the Hangaram Museum in the Seoul Arts Center. Special focus, Quay Brothers: Masters of Puppet Animation, which was scheduled to be held during the festival from May 28 to June 6, will be revealed through the long-running screening project later.

Meanwhile, the 21st JEONJU IFF is going to be changed into an exclusive edition for competition sections in order to participate in the national effort to protect people’s safety against COVID-19. From May 28 to June 6, JEONJU IFF will be held as a form of exclusive festival with no public audience but with the minimum number of judges and filmmakers of each competition sections including International Competition, Korean Competition and Korean Competition for Shorts. In addition, the festival is planning to have online screenings of films whose productions and directors approve. Also, it will continue its funding & supporting programs for filmmakers such as JEONJU Project Market as ever. The supporting programs will be organized as safely as possible through on and off line. Afterwards, JEONJU IFF will have long-running screening programs to show the 21st edition’s official films to the audiences, according to the guidelines about COVID-19 from the government and local authorities.
