Review

In India, where almost 1,000 films are produced every year, films are classified into two categories: the Masala movie and the non-Masala movie. Masala is a unique Indian genre that fuses traditional Indian musical styles, melodrama, action, song, and dance. And , the most popular Indian film of 2004, doesn´t stray much from the typical Masala format. Air force pilot Veer goes behind bars for 22 years for Zaara the woman he loves. A female lawyer, in order to clear Veer´s name, comes for an interview, and the dramatic story of a star-crossed love affair unfolds. Although the film is full of Bollywood cliches, this film for people who are only aware of when it comes to Indian films are in for a surprise. The dynamic song and dance sequences; the extravagant costumes; the charismatic actors; dizzying camerawork; colorful locations etc will make us realize why Hollywood blockbusters such as and do not fare too well in India. The tragic love affair between Indian Veer and Pakistani Zaara reminds us of the political dispute between India and Pakistan. And through a story of two lovers who reunite after 22 years, the audience can feel director Chopra s hopes for a better relationship between the two nations.
