Review

The renowned film critic Andrew Sarris called John Ford ‘America’s cinematic poet laureate’. Peter Bogdanovich is another of his many advocates. He published Ford’s interviews in 1967 and made a documentary on his films in 1971, two years before Ford died. The update₩d Directed by John Ford that came out 35 years later shows Bogdanovich’s unchanged respect toward the master of American classic cinema. The new version has interviews with Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Walter Hill in addition to the existing narration by Orson Welles and the interviews with Ford, John Wayne, James Stewart and Henry Fonda. With plentiful excerpts from Ford’s vast filmography the documentary offers a kind and interesting explanation of Ford’s cinematic views and the issues surrounding his films like the beauty, storytelling, history and family. The new Directed by John Ford demonstrates Bogdanovich’s comprehensive knowledge about Ford and his will to keep the cinematic poetic laureate remembered.
