MANILA IN THE FANGS OF DARKNESS
Director_ Khavn de la Cruz
Philippines 2008 72min DV color/b&w feature
Review

In this film, Khavn creates a new character, “Kontra Madiaga,” who combines Julio Madiaga from Lino Brocka’s Manila In The Claws of Light(1975) and General Kontra from Fight for Us(1989). A man turns to murder in order to protect a woman in white clothing that symbolizes her innocence from the evil and garbage of the city. His act has already been revealed through his own words and he contemplates about this and that, as if he is quoting from the history of national film. “No matter how many evils I slaughter, Manila will not change.” Taking one step beyond Found Footage, this film carries the characteristic of Chosen Footage, meaning that it goes beyond the limitation of an aesthetic pursuit of simple quotation and by magnifying a new dimension of the aesthetic, the historical and the sociological, it forces us to take a perspective different from the one we held before. Borrowing from film history, it builds a narrative that goes forward to a new form of contemplation and finds a gaze of overcoming, rather than just ending up with political nihilism and ideological repetition. “How often we have passed by here? Nothing has been changed. I have always followed you Ligaya. Up to this moment, I still follow you.”

DIRECTOR
KHAVN
Khavn is the leading director of the Philippine New Wave which has flourished since the 2000s. In the Philippines, he is called the “father of digital film” as he made nearly a hundred short and feature films. Jeonju IFF first bonded with this versatile artist through the film MANILA IN THE FANGS OF DARKNESS (2008) and subsequently introduced Son of God (2010) and Mondomanila (2011). Khavn’s films are tinged with genre conventions but simultaneously display forms embodying the history and reality of the Philippines, raising questions about the nature of national cinema, national identity and history. Balangiga: Howling Wilderness, the film invited to this year’s Jeonju IFF, exhibits the will to overcome the historical deprivation of the Philippines under imperial violence. Happy Lamento will also be screened where he made an appearance.
