Born in 1937, Japan. He studied French literature at Meiji University in Tokyo. While serving as a production assistant on Kurosawa's Yojimbo(1961) he realized that he wanted to work in the film industry. After graduation, he started working in Nikkatsu studios as an assistant director under some of the studio's best directors of the time, including Suzuki Seijun and Imamura Shohei. Including Showa Trilogy, he directed many Roman Porno films and is still regarded as the best of Nikkatsu Roman Porno directors.
