Directed by Sebastien Pilote who became a rising star in cinema quebecois with his strong debut film The Salesman, The Auction tells a story of Gaby spending the rest of his elderly life raising sheep after his two daughters went away to Montreal.
His younger daughter, Frederique, is trying to make it as an actress. Marie, the elder, asks him for a loan to recover her husband´s business. After a great deal of consideration, he decides to liquidate his property, his farm and land, and move to an apartment in the city.
The Auction, like his previous work, is an anthem for beautiful losers. Describing the dismantling of idyllic past, the film maintains respect for a man struggling silently to keep human dignity.
The pastoral scenery and the score of country music that touches heartstrings run through the film to depict the beauty of all the things which fade away. The performance of Gabriel Arc, played Gaby, is magnificent. The film won the Grand-Prix from SACD Award in Cannes Film Festival 2013.
