Freedom Bus tells the story of 39-year-old Ashraf Sharkawy - born into an Egyptian family in Germany and grew up there - who abandons his comfortable life as a successful marketing director to launch a democratic campaign in Egypt. Prior to the first truly free elections in the history of Egypt, Sharkawy travels the entire country with a team of companions in his ´Freedom Bus´ and during 6 months they meet over a million people.
Why Sharkawy decided to leave his job is not the main interest of this film. As the campaign spreads to the Establishment, the citizens spontaneously start having discussions about the politics, democracy and the election. The participants of the Freedom Bus project do not show any particular political orientations throughout the campaign but only raise awareness of the impact of politics on everyday life and encourage and enable Egyptians to take their future into their own hands.
Freedom Bus presents a very unique viewpoint on the dramatic upheaval in the Arab world and is also an interesting road movie of a man whose identity is at the border of Africa and Europe.
