Lee Jin woo did a wonderful job capturing the moments of unfamiliarity in his debut feature film The Sundays In August. Observing the unusual experiences veiled by the mundane world of daily lives, Lee showed an interesting slice of life. An adaptation of Kim Young-ha’s short story The Lightening Rod, Waltzing on Thunder again presents interesting features of humanity. Mijung is a woman who works in an actor’s academy. She happens to know the society of the lightning survivors and faces her old wound with the help of Donggyu, the leader of the society. To describe the characters’ psychology, Lee seems to have employed more dramatic devices than he did in his previous work. For others, the struggle the characters are desperately going through is nothing but a fun, simple happening. Dealing with this discrepancy, the film through a light on the fear and the anxiety lay deep in our lives. The use of romantic element in the story also helps to prevent the descriptions of the characters from being conventional. This film affirms the talent of Kim Seo-hyung who plays the title role, as well as the ability of the director successfully pointing out the ironies of humanity.
