Review

A middle-class family in Calais encounters a series of setbacks. Georges lost his wife a few years ago. He lives with his daughter, a real estate agent, Thomas, a twice-married doctor, and Eve, his 2-year-old granddaughter. But they only communicate on social media. When an accident at the construction site causes conflict between the family and the workers, each of them is troubled as to how to respond. At first glance, the film seems to take a different tone from Michael Haneke’s previous works, but a consideration of works like ''Benny´s Video''(1992) makes clear that he’s been consistently interested in contemporary life. ''Happy End ''shows characteristics from his early works, and the superb cast pushes the irony to extremes. The characters’ nervous responses seem to create an allegory of the modern society.
