Review

On a hot summer night in July 1967, chaos ensues in Detroit. Violence, looting, and brutal police suppression have been going on for two days. Based on the true 1967 event in Detroit where soldiers were sent in to counterpose black civilians, the film fills the screen with a heightened sense of realism almost like a documentary. As well as an overview of the whole incident, we are given insight into what really happened at the motel, which reveals the absurdity of the so-called riot. Above all, director Kathryn Bigelow uses realistic images to transport us to the middle of the city in the summer of 1967. The result is a panorama of the turmoil of history that was passionate yet inessential and oppressive yet farcical. Kathryn Bigelow returns with an energetic new work. [LEE Sang-yong]
