Raul Ruiz´ Time Regained
Dialogues of the Exiles
Director_ Raul RUIZ
Chile, France 1975 100min DCP color feature Fiction
Review

Raul Ruiz left Chile for Paris shortly after Augusto Pinochet´s military coup in 1974. He started to make ''Dialogues of the Exiles ''loosely based on Bertolt Brecht’s play 「Dialogues of the Exiles」 in less than a month after his arrival in Paris. The film unfolds around the kidnapping case of a Chilean musician. But its main theme is not the kidnapping case but the fate of exiles. Ruiz makes real exiles appear in it. The performances from a well-cast ensemble represent the identity of nervously floating exiles. The scenes, making the poetic impression while maintaining the credibility of documentary, present the decisive and understated quality of the low-budget film. The sincere description of the life in exile deeply touches us with semi-documentary style realistic, improvisatory and unpredictable, unpleasant. [JANG Byungwon]
