The Portuguese word "saudade" refers to a profound emotional state of feeling nostalgic or melancholic, longing for loved ones, and feeling hopeful while ruminating on sad memories. The film tells us a story of a family that can be best summarized by this untranslatable word along with delicate direction and a high aesthetic caliber. The director faced her mother´s death at the age of 17. Thinking about her own dad, who lost his mother at the age of 36, she made a film which is a hybrid of fiction and non-fiction. The chronicles of family history are recounted by voices reading letters. The voices reveal the sadness from losing a family member as well as happy memories with the deceased loved ones. The grandmother’s voice tells us every child is as uncontrollable as little birdies. And there is her child who used to dream of turning into a bird. Inspired by aforementioned family stories surrounding birds, the film traces down the genealogy of a family, turning the loss that every family has to encounter into art. It never fails to deliver a strong emotion, through a symbolic epic that unfolds in a non-linear manner. [Sung MOON]
