Review

New Queer Cinema earned its prominence at the Sundance Film Festival in early 90s, and Tom Kalin´s stands out as one of the most controversial and sensitive films of the era. ´s subject, or allegory, is a pair of infamous killers and their trials. In the aftermath of World War One in the United States, two 18 year olds, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, abduct a 13-year-old girl and brutally murder her. The two young Jewish college men from prominent families get arrested, and their homosexual ties are soon revealed. The incident has been made into a film many times in the past. Richard Fleisher´s and Alfred Hitchcock´s were both based on this crime. Both films, however, ´erased´ the sexual identity of the two men. And this is where Tom Kalin differs with the other two directors. Tom Kalin connects the incident with homophobia. What the director seeks to do in his film is to bring hidden homosexual desires to the forefront of the discourse. In this way, is far from the usual demand that "gay films" portray gays in a positive manner. comes closest to explaining the relationship between desire and power.
