The 27th JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Co-Directors MIN Sungwook and JUNG Junho) unveiled the lineup of the Expanded Cinema section.
The Expanded Cinema section stands out as a program that brings together works treating cinema as a language in its own right, and that most boldly respond to the currents of our time through their form.
This year’s lineup comprises 10 feature films and 15 shorts, including 2 World Premieres, Search for Immortality and The Light of Silence, alongside 15 Asian Premieres, and 8 Korean Premieres.

Teresa ARREDONDO LUGON's That Other White Jungle, which premiered at the FIDMarseille, illustrates how the most intimate family memories can be transformed into cinema of striking beauty. Meanwhile, Carlos CASAS's Krakatoa, premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, reimagines a geographical journey to the site of a world-altering volcanic eruption as a richly immersive experience of image and sound. Sharon LOCKHART’s WINDWARD and James BENNING’s EIGHT BRIDGES offer what may be the most essential antidote for audiences navigating the turbulence of the present moment.

Further highlights include a range of distinctive works that explore the boundary between reality and fiction in diverse and compelling ways, such as Maureen FAZENDEIRO's The Seasons, Nicolás PEREDA's Copper, and Rhayne VERMETTE's Levers.

Also featured are films that intricately weave narrative with sensory experience, including Fabrice ARAGNO's le lac and Gabriel AZORÍN’s Last Night I Conquered the City of Thebes. Angela SUMMEREDER’s essay documentary B for Bartleby, draws connections between a mythic literary figure and the behaviors and conditions of contemporary society.

| △ The Light of Silence |
Regarding the significance of the shorts, Sung MOON, programmer of the JEONJU International Film Festival remarked, “The experience of watching fifteen short films presented in this section, far too various to be contained within a brief introduction, will affirm that cinema remains, even today, an art form with every reason to keep evolving.”
As a special program offering audiences an encounter with the materiality of film, director LEE Jangwook and music director LEE Minhwi will present a live film performance featuring a 16mm projection of LEE Jangwook's new work, The Light of Silence, accompanied by live cello and piano.
The 25 films selected for the Expanded Cinema section will be screened at the 27th JEONJU International Film Festival, which will take place over 10 days from April 29 (Wed) to May 8 (Fri), 2026.
