This year, the festival opens with Late Fame, setting the stage for the event, as director Kent JONES and actress Greta LEE are set to attend.

Ahead of its opening, the JEONJU IFF has unveiled its main events and guests, set to enrich this year’s edition. Going beyond film screenings, the festival brings the value of cinema to life through a diverse range of programs, further elevated by the presence of distinguished guests. A range of immersive experiences that intertwine the city of Jeonju and cinema will be offered exclusively at the festival.

Master Class is a session that features selected experts who have achieved exceptional cinematic accomplishments and carved out their unique place in the industry.

The 27th edition welcomes visionary filmmaker TSAI Ming-Liang, renowned for his "Hand-sculpted Cinema," an aesthetic philosophy that steps away from industrial modes of art production. In this session, he reflects on his cinematic world—one shaped less by conventional narrative and dialogue, and more by carefully composed, slow, and extended takes, alongside screening of Night Journey + Back Home.

Also joining the lineup is Mike FIGGIS, a pioneer of cinematic experimentation across film and music. His latest work, Megadoc, a behind-the-scenes documentary on Francis Ford COPPOLA's ambitious blockbuster Megalopolis, offers his distinctive perspective on art.

Journey to Cinema is a lecture series that features film scholars and critics who guide audiences beyond merely "watching" films to truly "understanding" them, offering diverse interpretations and context about film history.

Putney Swope
Professor and poet, Margaret RHEE will join the discussion of the Robert DOWNEY Sr.'s bold and unruly Putney Swope, offering her perspective on the artistic world of Robert Downey Sr., a maverick of American cinema who represents the essence of New York's underground.

Private Revolutions, Public Spaces: Works from the M+ Asian Avant-Garde Film Collection
Chanel KONG, a curator at M+, Hong Kong, Asia's first global museum of contemporary visual culture, will discuss the selection and screening process behind the Asian Avant-Garde Film Collection, offering expert commentary on each work.

Satantango
The 27th JEONJU IFF is holding a cinematic memorial for Béla Tarr. Satantango is a film adaptation of the novel by Krasznahorkai László, the 2025 Nobel Laureate in Literature, who also collaborated on the screenplay. As revisiting Satantango —which made its South Korean debut at the very first JEONJU International Film Festival by JUNG Sung-il who was the programmer of JEONJU IFF at that time—JUNG and a special guest who will be revealed later discuss both the film and the original novel. The screening will proceed on May 4, and Class Session will proceed on May 5, at Jeonju Cinema Town 7.

Harvard Film Archive Shorts: Landscape Cinema, Beyond the Sublime
Haden GUEST, a longtime friend of the JEONJU IFF and Director of the Harvard Film Archive, will present three curated short films: Creation, Crossroads, and Hand Held Day. Following the screening, he will lead a discussion on the cinematic moments shaped by the interplay of landscape and sound.

△ From the left: ZHANG Lu, OGURI Kohei

Cinema Conversation offers enriching, multilayered dialogues that move beyond the film itself, exploring broader contexts and connections.

Mothertongue
Traces of the Wanderer, an Eternal Aside

The film criticism workshop "flowmotion," hosted by film critic JEONG Jihye, joins Cinema Conversation. Following a screening of Mothertongue by ZHANG Lu, this talk examines the traces of the wanderer in his films through the mood and history of specific places. It asks how his depiction of wandering and space has evolved as his creative base shifted from China to Korea and back again.

Sleeping Man
Actor AHN Sung-ki's appearance in a Japanese film after Korea's liberation marked a starting point for exchange between the two film industries. Director OGURI Kohei will join the session as a guest to reflect on his memories and encounters with the late, legendary actor AHN Sung-ki, who left an indelible mark on Korean cinema.

△ From the left: BYUN Young-joo, SHIM Yonghwan, YOON Gaeun

J Special Class is a featured series showcases a selection of films carefully curated by the Programmer of the Year. Select sessions include conversations with directors, actors, and other contributors, offering audiences insights into these works.

This year’s Programmer of the Year is director BYUN Young-joo. Starting with The Murmuring – Living as a Woman in Asia (1995), she completed a trilogy of documentaries about women who were victims of the Japanese military "sexual slavery" system: Habitual Sadness 2 (1997) and The Murmuring 3 – My Own Breathing (1999). She later directed the films Ardor (2002), Flying Boys (2004), and Helpless (2012), as well as the television dramas Death to Snow White (2024) and Mantis: Killer's Outing (2025), and continues to actively create new works.

Joining director BYUN with each session, programmer MOON Seok will attend Helpless as a moderator, SHIM Yonghwan, director of the ShimYongHwan History N Education Institute, will join Lawrence of Arabia and Sea of Youth as a guest, and director YOON Gaeun will join as a guest for Habitual Sadness 2 and Two Days, One Night.

Each J Special Class session runs for 60 minutes following the film screening and English interpretation services will not be provided.

Live Film Performance is a 16mm film screening program that makes the audience experience the materiality of cinema, combining the sound of analog projectors with live musical performance.

This year's performance and screening title includes Surface Memory Oblivion and The Light of Silence. The program features the performance of director LEE Jangwook of Space Cell, music director LEE Minhwi, and cellist NAM Jeongheon. There will be a Q&A session after the screenings.

JEONJU Talk! Talk! is a signature talk program of JEONJU IFF, inviting audiences to join relaxed, behind-the-scenes conversations that go beyond the films themselves, exploring broader stories, inspirations, and creative influences.

This year's JEONJU Talk! Talk! is held at Jeonju Cinema Town, the only local movie theater in Jeonju. Drawing on the identity and significance of this historic local theater, the program aims to offer a special experience that fosters close communication and cultural solidarity not only with JEONJU International Film Festival audiences but also with local residents.

Detailed information of the main events and guests of the 27th JEONJU International Film Festival can be found on the official website (https://eng.jeonjufest.kr/). The 27th edition of the festival will take place over 10 days from April 29 (Wed) to May 8 (Fri), 2026, across Jeonju City.
