JEONJU IFF Launches Possible Cinemas Section, Exploring Diverse Modes of Production Through Artistic Imagination
- Possible Cinemas Debuts: 5 Essential Works Challenging Financial and Creative Limits
- 1 World Premiere, 3 Asian Premieres and 1 Korean Premiere Set for JEONJU
The 27th JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Co-Directors MIN Sungwook and JUNG Junho) launches Possible Cinemas section.

Possible Cinemas is a newly introduced section dedicated to films that explore diverse modes of production through artistic imagination. Previously presented as a Special Focus, it now returns as a regular section in response to contemporary industry challenges, highlighting alternative production models that question the notion of cinema as an inaccessible, high-cost art form.

This year’s section presents five films, comprising one World Premiere, three Asian Premieres, and one Korean Premiere.

Sung MOON, a programmer of JEONJU IFF, noted that these films suggest the real limitation lies not in finance but in creativity, with their distinctiveness rooted in alternative ways of thinking and making. MOON further emphasized, “In the face of a system that appears solely concerned with box office rankings, profits, and prestige, and shows no sign of relinquishing those ambitions, perhaps only one path remains open to us: to make cinema possible.”

Starting the lineup is Isiah MEDINA’s Gangsterism (2025), which reveals that cinema’s political force lies not only in its narrative, but also in its very mode of production.

Nicolás PEREDA’s Everything Else Is Noise (2026) challenges the notion that fiction filmmaking necessarily requires large budgets, showing instead how inventive creativity can fully realize fictional worlds.

The Bare Trees with Bullets (2025), directed by TSUKASA Shinichiro, marks the 74-year-old filmmaker’s feature debut, transforming social issues into a genre film infused with gun battles.

Also featured is The Plant from the Canaries (2025) by RUAN Lan-Xi, an intimate and deeply personal portrait of a young woman striving to find her place in a foreign country.

Pascale BODET’s A Lot Talk (2026) boldly combines documentary and comedy to offer a sincere exploration of one of today’s most urgent and complex issues, immigration in major cities.

Five films selected for the Possible Cinemas will be screened at the 27th JEONJU International Film Festival. This year’s festival will take place over 10 days from April 29 (Wed) to May 8 (Fri), 2026, across Jeonju City.
